Hey Dolls
With John’s work schedule being the way it is, we do not spend much time together throughout the week. But we always have the weekend together. There are pros and cons to John being in the military. Knowing that he will always have weekends off is one pro! Unless he has 24 hour duty…that’s definitely a con. Being part of a military family forces you to make your own family traditions. One of our little family traditions is always having breakfast together on the weekends. At least one morning each weekend we try our best to sit down and have a family breakfast. It’s wonderful to sit down at the table together and not be in front of the TV or computer – which I feel like we do far too much in this house! It’s a time for John and I to sit and talk, while we watch Charlotte try new foods! As a new wife to a man that loves to eat, I have had to up my cooking skills. When John and I first were married, I mostly used the crockpot and recipes from Pinterest. As time has passed, I have gradually become more comfortable in the kitchen. Cooking has also been a great way for my mother and I to still bond while I am away. I find my self calling her almost every time I cooked to ask some little question.
My mother is an amazing cook. She can cook, grill, or bake just about any you ask her to. My favorite breakfast dish is by far her homemade biscuits and gravy! I mean… who doesn’t love biscuits and gravy? And for some crazy reason I had it in my mind that making homemade gravy was hard. Before Charlotte was born my mother came down to spend the last few days of my pregnancy with me. Those last few days turned into two weeks. Miss Charlotte was not ready to grace us with her presence yet. So while she was here I finally decided to watch and learn how to make my favorite breakfast dish. Making homemade gravy is so so so easy dolls! All you need is milk, sausage, flour, and salt and pepper!
Since we are on the subject of me learning new things. After our delicious breakfast I was invited to go out and shoot with my friend Elizabeth this afternoon. By shoot I mean shoot photos, not guns. I have owned my new camera for a few months now and have not really found the time to go out and use it the way I would like to. There is a lot to learn about photography! The first day I brought my camera home, I had the idea that I could just pop that bad boy out of the box and start shooting. But that was definitely not the case! I have owned my fair share of point and shoot cameras over the years. However, learning how to work a DSLR is an entirely different ball game! I’ve been practicing around the house with Charlotte and the dogs. But today I was lucky enough to tag along with Elizabeth while she photographed another Photog in the Columbus area. There is so much to learn, before I met Elizabeth I had no idea how much work went in to being a photographer. I am so lucky she has passed on so much of her knowledge to me. Here is one of the pictures I snapped yesterday afternoon!
Yesterday turned out to be an awesome day! John, Charlotte and I had a great morning together full of love and laughs. Then Elizabeth and I had so much fun meeting Lacy and capturing some beautiful photos. And ending the day with Kourtney and Khloe take the Hamptons! All in all it was the perfect Sunday!
Sausage Gravy Recipe
1 pound mild Breakfast Sausage [I use Tennessee Pride][John also likes spicy sausage]
1/3 cup flour
4 cups milk [whichever milk you use, whole, 2%, skim…you pick]
1/2 teaspoon seasoning salt
2 teaspoons black pepper [more/less, depending on your tastes]
8-10 Biscuits [I use whatever brand is on sale]
You start by crumbling and browning the sausage over medium high heat. Sprinkle half the flour and stir until the sausage soaks it all up and then add the rest of the flour. This meat will look very dry. Continue to stir and cook for another minute. Turn up heat to medium-high and pour in the 4 cups of milk. Add in pepper and seasoning salt. Stir consistently until gravy is very thick. (Once the mixture starts to boil it will thicken very quickly.) It will take 10 minutes or so. If the gravy gets too thick, just add a little more milk. Add more seasoning if needed. Serve over warm biscuits.
