Woohoo! We are only three days away from Halloween! If you are like me, then I am sure you have been counting down the days. Halloween is so much fun, I mean, who doesn’t love to get dressed up and eat candy until your stomach hurts? I know I do. But it can also be a stressful holiday if you didn’t find the right costume in time. If that sounds like you, I have you covered. I am going to show you how to get this super glam Dia De Los Muertos (Day Of The Dead) Sugar Skull look from start to finish, and with only items I found at my local Walmart!
First of all, here is everything you will need to pick up to create this Sugar Skull look.
- Fake Flowers in different shades, or real if you want to get super fancy. I like the fake ones so they can be reused.
- Small or large width non-plastic headband – size depends on how large you want the crown to be.
- Hot glue gun.
- Black and white base makeup.
- Different shades of eyeshadows (if you are going for a colorful look, all Sugar skulls are different, that’s what is so fun about them!).
- Rhinestones, I found mine in the craft section at Walmart while looking for the flowers.
- False eyelashes…it’s Haloween so we need that extra pop.
- Neutrogena Makeup Remover Cleansing Towelettes & The Neutrogena Ultra-Light Cleansing Oil. With all the layers of makeup we are going to be applying, these are a must for quick and easy removal!
Now let’s get to the fun part… the tutorials! First up is the Flower Crown.
- Separate the flowers from their stems and clip the backs until they will lay flat on the headband.
- Choose the flower you want to go in the center of the crown.
- Glue down the largest pieces first so you can build onto them.
- Once you have the largest flowers in place, start gluing down the smaller ones to make the crown look fuller.
- Now that you have done some serious hot gluing, let this beauty dry all the way…and voila! You have a gorgeous Flower Crown!
Ok, so now that we have finished the crown, we move on to the REALLY fun part… the Sugar Skull Makeup Tutorial. This was my first ever run at this so bare with me! And I just want to give a quick shout out to my husband for getting up every 3-5 minutes to take a photo for this tutorial!
- Start with a fresh clean face.
- Apply your favorite moisturizer and face primer, we are going to be applying a lot of makeup so we want to make sure it lasts all day/night.
- Apply a base of white color all over the face, be sure to leave space around your eyes and the tip of your nose. I ended up mixing in a drop of my lightest foundation so the white face paint would blend better. Then, set with a white or translucent powder! We don’t want this base moving around at all!
- Draw in large circles around your eyes and fill them in with black eye liner using your eyebrows as a guide to help make the circles as symmetrical as you can. This is a Halloween look so don’t worry if it gets a little messy! Just like the white base, set this area with matte black shadow.
- For the nose, use the same eye liner to draw an upside-down heart shape. Fill in and set with the same matte black as the eyes.
- This is the part were the real creativity comes into play. The eyes. I added scalloped shapes around my eyes with a purplish pink lipliner to give a flower effect.
- After drawing on the scallops, go ahead and fill them in. Then, I went in with a teal shade liner and drew in between the black and purple to give more color to the look.
- Now that my eyes had all the color in place, I went in and started adding the rhinestones. The gems I had were “self adhesive”, but that doesn’t really apply to skin. So, I used my white to clear lash glue to hold those littles babies in place.
- For extra pop to the eyes, go back in with a shimmery eyeshadow and apply false lashes.
- Contour. Normally we go in with the same old flesh tones to contour, but for this look we get to go color crazy! Start out with black and blend it out. Then, start adding your colors from darkest to lightest. Just like eyeshadows, the more color you use, the better it will look and the easier the blending will be.
- Once you have all your base and colors down, its time to add the details. Sugar skulls traditionally have a lot of little dots and curly lines. However, I made the eyes so big I didn’t leave myself much room. I added as many as I could without it all running together.
- Decorate! Sugar skulls always have some type of design on the forehead and chin area, so I went in and made designs with more gems!
- Lastly, the mouth area. I first went in with a purple lipstick on the outer lips, then black in the center and set it with a white shadow to give it more of a “dead” look. To finish off, I added the black lines going through the lips!
Here is my finished product…
Applying Halloween makeup is always super fun, however, the removing part…not so much. It’s especially difficult on a look like this where we applied glue to the skin. Using a makeup removing wipe makes this process so much easier. I have been using the Neutrogena Makeup Remover Cleansing Towelettes for years to remove my everyday makeup, so I knew they were my best bet for removing this Sugar Skull Mask. I removed almost this whole face of makeup with just one towelette. These little babies are powerful! The residue from my glued on gems and lashes couldn’t even put up a fight. When I was at Walmart shopping for the towelettes, I noticed Neutrogena also has a new Ultra-Light Cleansing Oil. You know I love a good oil, so I picked that up as well!
I was so sad to see all this makeup go, but I am glad it was almost effortless to remove it.
What are you dressing up as this year? Will you be applying a face full of makeup? If so, take a before and after photo using Neutrogena Makeup Remover Cleansing Towelettes and join the #NeutrogenaFaceOff – Happy Halloween Beauty Queens!
