Ok dolls, so a few months ago there was A LOT of drama going on in the liquid lipstick world (first world problems, right?) The theory was that the Kylie Lip Kit was the same as the ColourPop ultra matte liquid lipstick. As a customer of both brands, I felt it necessary to give my thoughts on this super important matter.
When I saw the article, my first thought was that it couldn’t be true. I had purchased a few ColourPop shades, and also had quite a few Kylie products. But, I thought I should do a little more investigation on the issue before I gave my opinion. I believe the big difference between the two is that the Kylie lip kits come with a lip liner. I didn’t own any ColourPop liners or really any shades that could be considered dupes. So, I popped over to the ColourPop site (no pun intended HA) to grab a makeshift version of a lip kit.
On ColourPop’s site there are “This Goes With” liner opinions. For each of the five Ultra Matte liquid lipsticks I choose the liner recommended by the site. Easy peasy. If you are new to ColourPop, their Ultra Mattes retail for only $6, and their liners for $5. Therefore, each “lip kit” will run you $11, which is a huge difference from the Kylie at $29. Another price difference is the shipping cost. My last ColourPop order was free (not sure why) and the time before that was $4.99. Kylie Cosmetics charges a massive $8.95. As a small business owner myself, I think Kylie could drop that price. My shipping charge is $6.50 AT MOST for House of W, and that is for products that weigh probably three times more than Kylie’s lip kit. No one likes to pay for shipping, so in my eyes that is just the name of the game. Anyway, my ColourPop lip kit order was $55 for 5 “kits”, and if I were to make that same order with Kylie it would cost about $155. DAMN, it really hits hard when you do the math.
So, let’s get to my review. The colors I purchased were…Ultra Mattes– Bianca, Midi, Platform, Trap, Chi
Lippie Pencil– Polite Society, Chi, Skimpy, BFF, Tootsi.
I also previously purchased Ultra Mattes Creeper, Beeper, Tulle – all of which are pictured in the swatches below.
Ultra Mattes L to R || Creeper, Tulle, Beeper, Trap, Bianca, Chi, Platform. Midi
Lippie Pencil L to R || Skimpy, BFF, Chi, Tootsi, Polite Society
Dupe wise I think I only bought three good dupes for the Kylie Kits: CP Platform/KY Exposed, CP Midi/KY Koko K, CP Beeper/KY Candy K. Chi and Dolce K are similar as well, but none of them are the exact same shade.
Packaging is another thing people say is the same. And for the most part, this is true. They both come in the same tube, with simple color differences. Nonetheless, the ColourPop logo has faded off almost all my tubes after being in my makeup bag. Kylie’s still look like new.
As for my thoughts on what is inside the ColourPop lip kit, I believe they are not the same as the Kylie Cosmetics lip kits. The ColourPop Ultra Mattes are way more drying on the lips and come off way sooner. When I tried to apply the lippie pencil before the ultra matte liquid lip, it would not dry down all the way in that area for me. With Kylie’s, you can apply the lip liner all over the lip and the liquid lip will always dry down. I have read all the same blogs saying they have the same ingredients, but who knows if the percentages are the same. All I know is for me – they are not the same. HOWEVER, you cannot beat the price point of the ColourPop lip kit. I mean, $11 for a liner and an ultra matte is amazing. Sure they aren’t the top liquid lipstick in my book, but they are stunning for what you pay. If you are new to the liquid lip game, I highly recommend picking up the ColourPop Ultra Mattes before dropping money on any of the other high-end brands.
So, that’s my opinion on the “are they or aren’t they the same” debate. In truth, they aren’t that different… but if I really break it down Kylie comes out on top(for me). And nowadays, makeup has become a very serious subject, right? Take a side people! ColourPop or Kylie Cosmetics, Democrat or Republican? Jk its just makeup!
What are your thoughts on ColourPop Lip Kits? P.S. Stay tuned for my review on my newer Kylie Lip Kits.
